Abstract

Salinity stress is a major abiotic constraint that inhibits growth and reduces the physiological performance of rice plants. This study aimed to evaluate the morphological, physiological, and biochemical responses of black glutinous rice (Oryza sativa L. var. glutinosa) to salinity stress, with emphasis on the role of abscisic acid (ABA) under in vitro conditions. The experiment was arranged in a factorial Completely Randomized Design with two factors: salinity level (0 and 150 mM NaCl) and ABA treatment. The observed parameters included plant height, root length and number, relative water content, electrolyte leakage, and the contents of hydrogen peroxide and malondialdehyde. The results showed that salinity stress reduced plant growth and water status while increasing oxidative stress. Exogenous application of ABA improved several physiological parameters and reduced cellular damage under salinity stress. These findings indicate that ABA plays an important role in enhancing the tolerance of black glutinous rice to salinity stress.
