Abstract

Sangkuriang catfish (Clarias gariepinus) hatchery operations require appropriate feed management and broodstock selection to ensure reproductive success and the production of high-quality fry. This study aims to describe the feed management for fry and broodstock, as well as the broodstock selection process for Sangkuriang catfish at the Tetehosi Afia Freshwater Fish Seed Center (BBIAT). A descriptive qualitative research method was employed, utilizing interviews with informants possessing knowledge and experience in hatchery operations. The interview results indicate that fry feeding is conducted in stages using PF 0, PF 100, PF 500, PF 800, and PF 1000 feeds, tailored to the size of the fry. For broodstock maintenance, PF 128 serves as the primary feed, supplemented with snails (Achatina fulica) prior to spawning. Broodstock selection is based on morphological characteristics and reproductive behavior. Males are identified by an elongated, reddish genital papilla and more aggressive behavior, whereas females exhibit an enlarged, soft abdomen and a reddish, enlarged genital papilla. Feed management and broodstock selection are crucial components in preparing for Sangkuriang catfish spawning.
