Abstract

This study aims to analyze Islamic education policy in Indonesia, focusing on its regulatory framework and implementation within the national education system. Islamic education holds a strategic role in shaping students’ character and morality while contributing to the development of human resources grounded in Islamic values. Juridically, the existence of Islamic education has been formally recognized in Undang-Undang Nomor 20 Tahun 2003 tentang Sistem Pendidikan Nasional, which affirms that religious education is an integral part of the national education system, and is institutionally administered under the authority of Kementerian Agama Republik Indonesia. This research employs a qualitative approach using a library research method. Data were collected from various literature sources, including academic books, journal articles, and relevant policy documents. The data collection technique involved documentation study, while data analysis was conducted using content analysis with a descriptive-analytical approach. The findings indicate that Islamic education policy in Indonesia has a strong regulatory foundation and has shown significant development, particularly in strengthening madrasah institutions and recognizing pesantren within the national education system. However, its implementation still faces several challenges, such as dualism in educational governance, disparities in institutional quality, limited human resources, and the suboptimal integration of religious and general knowledge within the curriculum. Furthermore, globalization and technological advancements require policies that are more adaptive and innovative. In conclusion, Islamic education policy in Indonesia can be categorized as progressive; however, it still requires optimization in its implementation. There is a need for more comprehensive policy integration, improvement in human resource quality, and adaptation to technological developments to ensure that Islamic education remains relevant while preserving its fundamental values.
