Analisis Teknik Penerjemahan Kategori Budaya Yang Diterapkan Dalam Novel The Dragon Republic (2019) Karya R.F. Kuang

Abstract

The analysis focuses on identifying the categories of cultural words in the source text, classifying the translation techniques applied by the translator, and determining the dominant translation technique used throughout the novel. This study aims: 1) To identify the translation techniques of cultural categories applied in the novel The Dragon Republic (2019) By R.F. Kuang into Indonesian, and 2) To determine the most frequently used translation techniques of cultural categories applied in the novel. This study employs a descriptive qualitative research design. The data consist of culture-specific items identified in the English version of The Dragon Republic (2019) and their Indonesian translations. The data are analyzed using the theory of translation techniques proposed by Molina and Albir (2002) and the classification of cultural categories proposed by Newmark (1988).  This research examined 100 cultural terms found in The Dragon Republic, classifying them according to Newmark’s (1988) five cultural categories. Material Culture appeared most frequently (35%), succeeded by Social Organizations (29%), Ecology (24%), and both Social Culture and Gestures and Habits (6% each). Furthermore, the study identified six translation techniques proposed by Molina and Albir (2002). Established Equivalent was the dominant technique (44%), followed by Literal Translation (37%), Borrowing (14%), Adaptation (2%), Amplification (2%), and Description (1%). Ultimately, the translator's choice of technique depended on the specific cultural element and the target audience's familiarity with it, striving to maintain the original cultural significance while ensuring the Indonesian translation remained natural and readable.
