This study aims to describe the meaning of sadness conveyed through poetic signs in “Hujan Bulan Juni” by Sapardi Djoko Damono and “Selamat Tinggal” by Chairil Anwar. The study employs a descriptive qualitative approach based on Michael Riffaterre’s semiotics, particularly heuristic and hermeneutic reading, indirectness of expression, and the matrix–model–variant framework. The data consist of words, phrases, and relations between lines in the two poems. The analysis reveals two patterns of sadness: restrained longing, expressed through the personification of rain, and self-estrangement, expressed through imagery of a mirror, wounds, and an unrecognised voice. These interpretations are not intended as measurements of the poets’ psychological condition. The study shows that the meaning of sadness is built through relations among signs, rather than merely through words that name emotions.
