This study describes the relationship between social media use and Indonesian language use among university students through a literature review. It applies a descriptive qualitative approach and examines books and relevant scholarly articles concerning social media, sociolinguistics, language variation, and students’ language practices. The literature was read, recorded, grouped by theme, compared, and interpreted descriptively. The review indicates that social media provides a fast and broad space for interaction and encourages the circulation of informal varieties, slang, abbreviations, popular expressions, and the mixing or switching of languages. These forms can support creativity, intimacy, and social identity in informal communication. However, problems may arise when users do not adjust their language to formal academic contexts, particularly in spelling, word choice, punctuation, and sentence structure. The reviewed evidence does not justify concluding that slang use automatically reduces formal Indonesian proficiency. Instead, the key issue is students’ awareness and ability to select language varieties according to the purpose, audience, and situation. Social media can therefore function as both a challenge and a learning resource for Indonesian language literacy.
