WhatsApp is one of the communication media students can use to convey various academic needs to lecturers. Through this application, students can request information, ask for permission, arrange consultation schedules, submit assignments, request approval or signatures, and explain academic difficulties. However, the convenience of digital communication needs to be accompanied by the ability to construct clear, appropriate, and polite messages within academic relationships. This study aims to describe students’ strategies for communicating various academic needs to lecturers through WhatsApp from a pragmatic perspective. It employs a qualitative approach using a literature review method. The sources include books and previous studies related to pragmatics, speech acts, linguistic politeness, and academic communication ethics through WhatsApp. The analysis connects different academic needs with speech-act purposes and politeness strategies. Searle’s speech-act theory is used to understand the actions performed through language, while Brown and Levinson’s politeness theory explains the importance of considering the interlocutor’s face and freedom in communication. Conceptually, the study indicates that academic messages need to consider the sender’s identity, communicative purpose, request formulation, supporting explanations, and message closing. This study is expected to contribute to an understanding of clear and polite academic communication and provide a basis for further research using actual student–lecturer communication data.
