This study examines the actualization of Gus Dur’s humanist thought in addressing religious differences, particularly the relationship between maintaining one’s religious convictions and respecting people of other faiths without necessarily agreeing with all their beliefs or teachings. This study employs library research with a descriptive qualitative approach. Data were collected by reviewing books, scholarly journal articles, and academic publications relevant to Gus Dur’s thought, tolerance, pluralism, and interreligious relations. The data were analyzed through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing and verification. The findings indicate that Gus Dur’s humanist thought places human dignity and respect for individual rights at the center of responses to religious differences. Respecting people of other faiths does not require agreement with their theological beliefs; rather, it entails recognizing their right to practice their religion and to receive fair treatment. This perspective can be actualized through interfaith dialogue, social cooperation, rejection of discrimination, and protection of religious freedom. Therefore, the principle of “respect without agreement” remains relevant to fostering an inclusive and harmonious society without requiring individuals to abandon their own religious convictions.
